Trivia Night Raises $800 for a Great Cause

FBA-NOVA hosted yet another wildly successful Trivia Night event at The Light Horse. A record number of participants showed off their skills outside of the courtroom, including law clerks, courthouse personnel, probation officers, AUSAs, AFPDs, and private practitioners.  A special shout out to our celebrity guests, Judge Alston, Geremy Kamens, and Zach Terwilliger!

Participants arrived ready to trash-talk the competition and open up their wallets for a great cause.  Teams made donations at the door and “purchased” hints to tough questions, and many even contributed the value of hard-earned round prizes! Proceeds went to the Alexandria Reentry & Recovery Court (“ARRC”).  Led by Magistrate Judges Anderson, Davis, and Nachmanoff, this program gives criminal defendants with addiction histories the tools to maintain sobriety and reenter society as productive, healthy individuals. This event raised over $800 (!) that will be used to help ARRC participants with transportation, housing, and other expenses, and to purchase rewards and incentives as they reach milestones in their sobriety and reentry efforts.

Thirteen brilliantly-named teams (see below) made a valiant effort to secure bragging rights for 2020, but three teams eked out narrow victories. Congratulations!

WINNERS

1st Place: A Drinking Team with a Trivia Problem
2nd Place: Work Release
3rd Place: Team FBA

For those who missed out on all the fun (or who wish to relive their glory), here’s a quick recap:

  • Round 1: Lightning Round. We tested the participants’ ability to think fast (and to listen carefully … we’re looking at you, Team FBA) by requiring answers in less than ten seconds to questions such as who invented champagne (Dom Perignon) and what is the Earth’s diameter (approximately 8,000 miles).

  • Round 2: The Year 2020. Topics ranged from the leap year and the summer Olympics to the news program 20/20 and the shortened format of cricket (known as Twenty-20).

  • Round 3: Picture Round. Competitors were asked to answer questions based on images, which included identifying the ancient system of writing known as “Cuneiform” and the 1980s arcade game “Centipede.”

  • Round 4: Virginia is for Lovers of Sports Round. The teams impressed us with their knowledge of Virginia athletes and sports traditions, including the annual steeplechase classic known as the Virginia Gold Cup and Virginia-native Olympians Gabrielle (Gabby) Douglas and Reid Priddy.

  • Round 5: The Election Year. Participants fielded questions such as which country was the first to allow women to vote (New Zealand in 1893), who was the youngest American president (Theodore Roosevelt at age 42), and which two states permit convicted felons to vote (Maine and Vermont).

Thank you to all of our competitors for showing up, competing with such zeal, donating generously to ARRC, and supporting FBA-NOVA. Thank you also to our sponsors for helping to make the night such a great success: Carmichael, Ellis & Brock; Susan R. Podolsky; and DiMuroGinsberg.

Finally, thanks to the Young Lawyers Committee (particularly James Holt, Cailyn Reilly Knapp, Laurie Kirkland, and Jayna Genti) for putting on such a wonderful event. We'll see you all next time!
